Congratulations to our CEO and co-founder, Dr Matthew Beatty, who this week was welcomed into the 2024 cohort of the NHS National Innovation Accelerator.

We caught up with Matt to find out more about what this means for him and Surgery Hero.

What does it mean for you personally to be selected for the National Innovation Accelerator?

Being chosen for the programme is truly humbling. When you consider the impressive track record of past participants and the calibre of fellows in this cohort, it's a real testament to the work we're doing. I'm genuinely thrilled, both on a personal level and for our team, to receive this recognition for the impact we're making on people's lives. There's a clear benefit to digital prehabilitation for patients, clinicians, and the wider health system, and I'm optimistic that the NIA can help us establish a new standard of perioperative care.

On a personal note, I'm eager to collaborate with mentors, experts, and fellow innovators to expand my skills and knowledge, ultimately benefiting our company.

What are you most looking forward to?

I'm excited to gain insider knowledge and guidance on the most challenging aspects of running a successful business within the NHS, such as procurement, commissioning, health economics, and business case development. Of course, I'm also looking forward to collaborating with a diverse group of fellows, mentors, and NIA experts. The opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences, and receive mentorship is invaluable.

Additionally, I can't wait to see the potential for accelerating the adoption of Surgery Hero into new regions through the support and guidance provided by the accelerator programme. I truly believe this experience will not only enhance our company's capabilities but also allow us to have an even greater impact on healthcare.

What does this mean for your mission at Surgery Hero?

This is a significant milestone in our journey to transform perioperative care. Ultimately, our goal is to give all major-grade surgical patients access to prehabilitation support before their procedure. This recognition not only validates the importance of our mission but also provides us with the resources and support needed to further our business.

Having already worked with multiple NHS trusts to build a compelling evidence base, including our first publication in BMJ Open, completion of a multi-site RCT, and independent validation of real-world data from multiple ICS deployments, we are well-positioned to partner with the NIA to scale our service throughout the NHS.

Both myself and the team are thrilled to be part of this accelerator programme, and it strengthens our resolve to make a positive impact on the healthcare industry and improve patient outcomes worldwide.
