Mark is preparing for a total knee replacement. Since joining the Sapien programme he has given up drinking alcohol completely and his diet has changed for the better. He has reduced his weight by over 2 stone and has lost 4 inches from his chest. Mark's advice for anyone thinking of joining the programme is: Just embrace it, you’ve got nothing to lose!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m Mark and I’m 51. I am waiting for a total knee replacement surgery and decided to take part in the Sapien programme last year to prepare me for my surgery.

Why did you choose to join the Sapien prehabilitation programme?

I was getting into a bit of a dark place before my coach phoned me. I was drinking a lot on the weekends, and it was spiralling. I was putting weight on. I needed to dig myself out of a hole mentally and wanted to cope with it more. I have this mindset to get as healthy as I can before the operation and then I will come through it better.

Since completing the programme, how has your approach to managing your own health changed?

My life has totally changed. Sapien has helped me so much. It was always great, an achievement to tell someone what you’ve lost week on week. I really looked forward to the phone calls. When there is an extra person involved like your coach you get that feedback and encouragement to keep it up.

What are the main positives you have noticed?

At this moment in time the main positive change is my physical appearance. I have lost over 2 stone, I’ve lost 4 inches off my chest — I need a new wardrobe now! I still eat healthy and I still don’t drink. It’s been brilliant for me. It’s a complete and utter change of life.

What did you like most about the Sapien programme?

My coach was always there. Sometimes I would text him and he would always text back. If I had any problems or wanted to talk to him he was there. I really looked forward to the conversations.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking about joining the Sapien programme?

Just embrace it. You’ve got nothing to lose and just give it a try.
